As someone who jumped into digital SLR's with a 30D and no experience or background, this was a very beneficial book; even a year later, I still refer to it when I want to read up a little more on a particular function to practice a technique, or to brush up on certain features or settings.
If you have a lot of experience with SLR's, this book may not be the best for you. I, however, found it useful, and I still reference it often.

I felt like if my wife could spend $1200.00 on a camera i could spend twenty bucks on how to use it. If you are a beginning photographer and have never used a high end digital SLR I would highly recommened this book. However, if you have somewhat of an understanding for photography i would pass on it. In my opinion it is just a fancier version of the instruction manual that came with the camera. It has decent illustrations and is well written. It's a nice book for anyone who has recently bought a Canon 30D and serves as a good reference book.

When you buy an expensive GUITAR, you KNOW that playing skills DO NOT COME with it! When you buy an expensive CAR, you KNOW that driving skills DO NOT COME with it! When you buy an expensive CAMERA, why, then, do you NOT KNOW that exposure skills DO NOT COME with it?
This book teaches the beginning Digital/35mm photographer (9th grade level) the simple and practical methods of correctly exposing a subject. This is also the world's first Digital Zone System book that addresses the application of the Zone System of exposure using current manual digital cameras including many of today's D-Slrs. The book covers in detail the applications of a camera's meter, an off-camera spot meter, an off-camera incident meter, and easy-to-remember techniques for exposing sunlit to moonlit subjects without a meter. The book uses Farzad's simplified 5-stop technique using 100 ISO color slide or Digital Film as its base, but the same techniques can be applied to Black and White, as well as color negative film with different ISOs. Since all the thinking is done before the photographer takes the picture, the book is ideal for this millennium's 35mm photographers that use one-hour processing labs. I am a rank amateur just entering the world of photography and have struggles with trying to understand the concepts of exposure .....Well I have read ton's of books and articles but NOW is the first time that I have understood all of it. The book is amazing . It is written for the novice and for that I am grateful. but there is plenty in here for the experience photographer as well. I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you are serious about getting better shots this is definitely a book you need to read.

This is a wonderful book for those who wish to photograph their work in the most professional way possible. Mr. Meltzer takes you gently by the hand, assumes you are starting from scratch and gives an outline of the various types of digital cameras, how they work and compares them to film cameras -- all in an easily understood way. He then goes on to talk about other equipment, lighting, a bit of colour theory and different methods of photographing. If you need help photographing your art, this is the book to buy!
